Trans-Am Mustang returns to Sandown with Supercheap Auto Racing
In the 55th year of the Ford Mustang, Supercheap Auto Racing's Chaz Mostert and James Moffat will run the No. 55 Mustang Supercar in a new livery at the Sandown 500, paying tribute to Allan Moffat's iconic Trans-Am Coca-Cola Mustang.

Continuing the tradition of the Sandown 500 as the "retro round" of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, Mostert and Moffat's new look comes alongside the 50th anniversary of the Trans-Am, which debuted in 1969 by taking three wins from three races at the same Sandown circuit.

"I guess it's a happy coincidence that we get to race the No. 55 Mustang in the 55th year of Mustang," Mostert said, "so to celebrate retro round with a nod to one of the most iconic Mustangs in history is pretty cool. There's so many tie-ins with this thing, obviously Allan is one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport, and I get to race with James which has been a lot of fun, and the Trans-Am is best known for winning at Sandown, so I'm pumped to bring it all together at the Sandown 500."

In total, the 1969 Trans-Am took 101 race wins from 151 races courtesy of Moffat, and is widely thought of as the most famous Mustang race car to compete in Australia. The younger Moffat, James, spent seven seasons as a full-time Supercars driver before joining Mostert in 2018, where he has been invaluable as a fast and reliable co-driver in the enduros.

"The nod to dad is pretty cool," said James Moffat. "Obviously I picked up the sport in part thanks to him and have heard the stories of the Trans-Am, so to adopt its livery for our Supercheap Auto Mustang is pretty sweet. Hopefully it brings us some good fortune and we can take it to the top step of the podium."

Supercheap Auto shares in the excitement with Mostert and Moffat, as General Manager of Customer Communication & Engagement, David Bauer described.

"We at Supercheap Auto are thrilled to be a part of this retro livery for Chaz and James," Bauer said. "Having been involved in Supercars for over 20 years, we are big proponents of the retro round, bringing together the past and present, and paying tribute to some of the sport's most memorable cars and drivers. It doesn't get much more memorable than Allan Moffat's Trans-Am Mustang at Sandown, so to have a connection to the reincarnation of this iconic livery is very exciting for us. The car looks great, and we'll have two great drivers behind the wheel. We hope we can replicate the success Allan had at Sandown all those years ago."

The new livery also ties in with Tickford's recently released Trans-Am Mustang package, a modern interpretation of the BOSS 302 classic, including aesthetic and performance-based updates, with Tickford's 400kw power pack underneath the bonnet.

The final leg of the 2019 Enduro Cup, the Sandown 500, takes place November 8-10 at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne's Southeast.
