Courtney ninth in Townsville finale as Waters is spun from fifth
In an overall frustrating last race of the weekend, James Courtney (No. 44 Boost Mobile Ford Mustang) led Tickford Racing in Race 24, the final race of the Robson Civil Projects Townsville SuperSprint. Courtney was among the last cars to pit in Race 24, benefitting from a Lap 24 Safety Car that bunched the field up and allowed him to make up places in the race's final nine laps.

With finishes of eighth and 10th on Sunday, Lee Holdsworth (No. 5 Truck Assist Ford Mustang) climbs to ninth in the Virgin Australia Supercars drivers' championship through 20 completed races.

After finishing fifth in Race 23 on Sunday, Cameron Waters' (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) Race 24 was put into trouble when he was spun by Car 97 on Lap 15 near pit entry, costing him valuable seconds. Having run in the top five at the start of Race 24, the 26-year old crossed the finish line 12th, however retains fourth in the drivers' championship.

Jack Le Brocq (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang) scored a strong seventh place finish in Race 23, but ended the weekend with a 14th place finish in Race 24.

With four consecutive weekends of racing complete, the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship will take one weekend off before a doubleheader in South Australia at The Bend Motorsport Park. The first of the two rounds at The Bend takes place September 19-20.

"We got off to a pretty good start, eighth in the first race was good and starting seventh for the second, it was a good improvement on our car from last week. In the second race I picked up a vibration pretty early, which forced us into taking three tyres in the stop. We were up to sixth and going all right when the Safety Car came out and obviously we dropped a few spots going to the end. A couple of top 10s today which is nice, but we'll certainly look to make more gains before we get to Tailem."

"Our first race was okay, we didn't use all of our tyres, so we were in pretty good position for the last race. The car was much better in the last race and I was in a bit of a train so we decided to pit and try to get some clean air. Coming in to pit and as I started to lift off the throttle I just got drilled by Shane (van Gisbergen) and got turned around. He apologised to me after the race and obviously didn't know I was going to pit, it's frustrating but it is what it is. I thought he should have gotten a penalty but he didn't, so it looks like he owes me a free kick, and we'll go on to Tailem Bend. But overall a strong weekend in Townsville for the Monster car, obviously lots of trophies and good pace, so that's really promising, we'll try and finish the year strong."

"The car wasn't quite what we wanted this weekend, but it was nice to snag a decent result in the last race. We ran long and took two tyres at the stop, then the Safety Car allowed us to come through in the end and get ninth. All in all it's nice to be top 10, but we know we're capable of better results so we'll look to go better next round."

"Seventh in the first race today was pretty good, and even though the second race didn't go to plan I'm pretty happy with the weekend overall. I'm learning more and more every time we go out there, learning more from my team mates, and even though the results aren't always what we want I feel like we're getting there. We improved our qualifying performance this weekend which certainly helped, qualifying in the top 10 all three races this weekend is a good step forward. We'll try and keep that up and keep chipping away at it in the race."

"Obviously that's not the way we want to end the weekend. Cam getting spun was one thing and while the Safety Car helped JC it hurt Lee and Jack, so it's a bit of a frustrating way to finish. But all in all it was a pretty strong weekend, we had good car pace, good pit stops, and came back with four straight cars, which after two weekends and six races on a street circuit is saying something. It's been a big four weeks so the team's certainly earned a weekend off, we'll head back to the Gold Coast now and look forward to Tailem Bend. Even better though will be seeing some familiar faces tomorrow; we flew some of the crew's wives and kids out of Melbourne a couple weeks ago. They get into Queensland tonight and we'll get to see them when we get down there tomorrow, so while it was a tough afternoon we'll have plenty to smile about tomorrow."
