2009 V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP
UNDERWAY
The Clipsal 500 saw the commencement of the 2009 season, with
an entertaining weekends racing. Whincup left the weekend in
familiar standings, on top of the championship. For the Holden
fans, Will Davison started his career with HRT in impressive
fashion, claiming 2 podium positions around the Adelaide Parklands.
The controversy coming out of Adelaide focused
on the new for 2009 qualifying rules, seeing cars start both
races from the same qualifying position. The rule found only
a couple of drivers who supported it, with many drivers slamming
the rule and those that implemented it. The groundswell of
resentment for the rule is likely to see an amendment prior
to Hamilton. An additional full qualifying session is believed
to be favoured by VESA to set the grid for the second race,
maintaining that each race is a separate event.
The Grand Prix showed to those who thought
Craig Lowndes was a spent force, they need to think again.
Lowndes claimed races 1 and 3, winning both by a clear margin.
Winterbottom interrupted Lowndes' run by claiming race 2,
with Will Davison on the podium for the first two races and
fourth in the final race.
For GRM, with Caruso running the teams spare
chassis, they elected to start each race from pit lane. The
team believed if they suffered any further damage at the non-championship
round, it would affect their progress at Hamilton. Treating
each race as a test session meant cars #33 & #34 never
raced another car. Treating the Grand Prix with such little
respect showed GRM's opinion for the event.
Teams will now rest and regroup following
back-to-back events. Several teams will use a test day prior
to Easter, then pack everything up and send their cars off
to New Zealand. Hopefully the track improvements at Hamilton
make the weekends racing worthwhile watching, unlike last
year.
