STREET CIRCUITS V PERMANENT
The team at V8DD were a little surprised to receive feedback
defending street circuits following our last newsletter, particularly
defending Hamilton. The design of the circuit sees very little
on track action, a design that means from a TV point of view
in particular, the racing comes across as boring.
But all of this opened another question we
want to touch on, why a street circuit over a permanent circuit?
Many people continue to argue in favour of one or the other,
with Adelaide's street circuit generally the only street track
most agree is a complete success.
Do we want governments putting in millions
of yours, mine and our tax payers dollars into circuits that
will be used once a year, with little gain the other 51 weeks
of the year? But these events bring our sport to the public,
the public don't have to find the sport. Street circuits allow
for big crowds, many corporate opportunities for teams and
the series and the local city to publicise itself and gain
TV time that many argue would cost much more than staging
a weekends racing.
Or is it better to see a government put in
a similar amount of dollars into a permanent circuit, wether
that be upgrading an existing track or building a new circuit.
This circuit can then be used for other categories of motorsport
every other weekend, driver training during the week and many
other car related activities, corporate drive days among them.
It may not be able to attract a significant crowd to the track,
but fans still attend in mass.
Townsville will soon make its debut in the
series, on what can be described as a purpose built street
circuit, holding several similarities in that regards to Albert
Park and Adelaide. Homebush will see the final round of the
year. Both have received significant government funding for
the track builds, with talk of significant crowds attending
both. Hopefully their design allows for exciting racing, with
room for cars to rub and pass. We won't pass judgement on
them till we see some racing there of course.

THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT
Article by V8 Supercar fan Morticia0102
Winton, as a racetrack, is unfortunately, about to go the way
of the dinosaur
facing extinction at the hands of Auntie
Tony in favour of his penchant for street circuses and overseas
venues.
The old girl is indeed showing her age, particularly when compared
to the new pit/corporate facilities at Bathurst. But I must
confess to a soft-spot for the place, like Oran Park, the cheapest
ticket will provide a view of almost all of the track, you just
have to arrive early enough to claim it! Either that, or join
the flat-bed brigade and park your truck (sorry, that should
read: all-weather protection, elevated viewing platform) out
beyond the cleavage.
One of the few racetracks where camping is permitted, although
with the Fun Police imposing a "No Campfire" ruling
this year, one wonders how long campers will put up with such
draconian ideas? Stranger still is that the Fun Police haven't
worked out how to stop the myriad of viewing structures within
the camping area and along Shannons Straight from being erected.
The proximity of the Victorian Snowfields can sometimes have
a bearing on how many layers of clothes one requires to keep
out the chill. But then again, I've also been the victim of
some serious sunburn in July/August at the same place, go figure??
For those who like their accommodation a little more upmarket,
you may have to venture some distance from the track as most
of the nearby areas (Benalla and Wangaratta) are booked out
from year to year, by the same people (and no, I'm not about
to relinquish my motel booking any time soon).
There's a silliness associated with driving through the gates
at 6:00 am on Sunday morning. It's pitch black, if we're lucky
the temperature is only just on the positive side of zero degrees,
we've got so many layers of clothes on we look like Michelin
ladies, waiting for "real" coffee and tea to be served,
not to mention the egg & bacon rolls for brekkie and having
your photo taken with three like-minded girlfriends
because
we can!
Take a drive up the Hume Highway (if you find yourself in New
South Wales you've ventured too far), turn off at Winton, follow
the signs to Winton Raceway and sample the delights of a "real"
racetrack while you still can.
